Q:I came across Quoteskine volume1 when I was just looking around HMV today and I'm so glad I did. I really love it, (I'm a complete quote/art geek) I knew I wanted to buy it before I even opened it. I was standing there laughing so much at the Justin Bieber joke that when I looked up people were just staring at me! Its really brilliant, I wish I could do something like that for my art GCSE... :)
Thanks for such an awesome message! I went to my local HMV the other day to see my book in a “real shop” and they’d sold out. Which is pretty amazing, but I could’ve done with knowing it wasn’t in there before walking to the top floor.
Anyway, my 100% honest advice for your art GCSE is do whatever the fuck you want. As long as you have a good idea and execute it as best you can you’ll be fine. I told my art teacher the idea I had for my final GCSE work and she said if I did it I would get an F, guaranteed. As I said in the book dedication. But I’m so glad I stuck to my guns and did it.
In my uni course I let myself be lead in a direction I didn’t really want to go with my final project. Which in the end was just terrible. I quit the course and walked out while actually putting up the work for the final show. The lecturer talked me into going back and finishing it off, and I’m glad he did, but I literally scraped a 2:2 by the skin of my teeth.
I’m sure if I’d have gone with my ideas and believed in them more I’d have done much better, and more importantly I would’ve actually enjoyed myself. I think the most important aspect of any artistic work is that it comes from you. If you want to draw a tree, it’ll turn out a million times better than a tree that you’re told to draw. Every time.
Education is the last place where you pretty much don’t have to give a fuck about what you’re supposed to do. As soon as you get into the “real world” you’ll have a hundred different people telling you to draw a hundred different trees. But whenever you make the time to draw that one tree that is because you want to you’ll notice the difference.
That’s my opinion anyway, maybe it’s terrible irresponsible advice. I’d like to think it isn’t, because I truly believe it.
And, as I also said in the book dedication, I got a B in art.
Suck it, Mrs Brown.
