Customised tambourines for sale!

For those who missed it, I recently took part in an exhibition of customised tambourines called The Tamperine Project. They’re all up on eBay now, including a bunch by celebrities and other artists.

The first of mine was part of a René Magritte inspired wall mural and is currently at £25.

The second one was part of a wall mural featuring Listener lyrics and is up at only £3!

They’re both signed on the side and there’s only 4 days left to bid, so you could grab yourself a piece of one off original art for a real bargain. They will ship them worldwide too.

And of course all the proceeds go to the great charity Sound It Out.

Here’s a few photos of Sound It Out’s tamperine exhibition that I’ve been helping to put together for the last few days. The walls are covered in work by West Midlands based artists who have included their tamperine in the wall piece.

I drew a massive long trail of lyrics and quotes that winds it’s way around the room.

Craig Earp drew some crazy alien/sci-fi imagery.

Lucy McLauchlan has filled a whole section of the room with amazing black and white painting. She also did my favourite 10 tamperines.

And Log Roper painted a huge portrait of Levon Helm, complete with tamperine eyeball.

A bunch of celebrities have also made tamperines which are the ones hanging in the centre of the room.

They’re all up for auction (ours included) on eBay for the next 9 days to raise money for Sound It Out. It’s a brilliant cause, so get bidding. Gervais’ one is already nearly at £1000!

If you’re in Birmingham you can also go and check out the exhibition at the Mailbox until May 26th.

What kind of advice would you give to a University student who's taking art and design courses? I'm hoping to become a graphic designer too!

It’s hard to have any specific advice for quite a general question.

But enjoy it and make sure you do things that excite and interest you I guess.

Try things too, a million things. There are so many resources and so much knowledge available to you at uni, make sure you take advantage of it all.

Be interested.

Don’t be scared to make mistakes.

Push yourself.

Don’t be afraid to leave less sure of what you want to be ‘when you grow up’.

I’m doing a mural this weekend for a music based charity and I’m researching quotes.

The mural is hopefully going to be a big line that winds around a room and is made up of a ton of quotes, so I’m trying to find a stack of quotes/lyrics/etc specifically about music or sound.

Do you guys have any favourites?

They don’t have to to mention the word music, and they can be abstract. But If they were about the positive effects of music in some way that would be awesome.

Leave me an answer if you’ve got one, the more the better.

48SHEET mural in the Mailbox, Birmingham

Here’s what I’ve been up to for the last couple of days. A mural I painted in response to the 48SHEET project that’s currently running in Birmingham.

48SHEET is a project that has transformed 100 billboards for the whole of April into works of art.

If you’re going to be in Birmingham this month it’s definitely worth checking out.

This mural was painted in the 48SHEET space in the Mailbox.

There are loads of screenings, artist talks, workshops and other events in there over the next week or so. Check out the programme and go get involved.

I’ve gone back to basics (PENS) for my piece for the upcoming Once Upon a Time in the Midlands show. All the work is inspired by fairy tales, and mine is based on Labyrinth. Here’s a progress shot of the piece. I’ll post a finished one when it’s done.

Once Upon a Time

Here’s a sneaky peek at my fairy tale inspired piece for the upcoming Once Upon a Time in The Midlands exhibition.

As you can probably tell my piece will be based on the film Labyrinth!

The show opens this Saturday (21st April) at 6/8 Kafe in Birmingham. The line up is amazing and I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone’s finished work.

So if you’re around around in Birmingham on Saturday come along to the opening day. There’ll be a bunch of us doodling up a storm, selling stuff, and probably drinking a lot of beer.

You will also be able to do a kind of mini tour of my work in Birmingham for the next few weeks. There’s this group show at 6/8, my solo show is still running over at Brewsmiths, murals will be up this week at the 48Sheet space in the Mailbox, and the outdoor tunnel/mural should be up in the next week or so too.

Once everything is up I’ll do a printable map or something showing where all my bits are, in case anyone wants to go see it all in one hit. But in the meantime have a look at the poster below for the Once Upon a Time opening day.

I’ll be doing some exciting stuff this week.

48Sheet/Papergirl

If you live or work in Birmingham I’m sure you’ll already know about 48Sheet and Papergirl Birmingham. But if you don’t, 48Sheet is an unavoidably brilliant project that has turned Birmingham into an urban art gallery using 100 artist designed billboards.

Papergirl is amazing too, a ton of artists have submitted a bunch of different artworks that will all be distributed to the public for free by a team of wonderful Papergirls (and boys I think). I’ve submitted a few original pieces to Papergirl, so if you happen to be in Birmingham on the 28th April you might be handed one of my pieces… Or one of the other amazing submissions!

I’ll be involved quite a lot with 48Sheet this week. I’m painting at least one giant mural at the 48Sheet space in the Mailbox, which is shown in the first two photos. Then hopefully the rain and wind holds off long enough to allow me to transform that little tunnel of white boards into something cool. I’m not sure which street it’s on, but it’s on the way to the Mailbox from New Street Station.

Once I’ve painted it I’ll post some more photos and let you know where it is.
